 Axegressor - Last (Listenable) Straightforward Euro-thrash awaits the listener of Last, the third release from Finland’s Axegressor. Solid riffs, notable lead guitar work and a unique vocalist help this release stand out from the modern day thrash heap. These guys definitely have more of an old German thrash sound, which is a nice change of pace from the loads of American thrash rip-off bands out there these days. I think the main strength here is the tightness and precision of the band. Unlike a lot of thrash albums, it sounds like these guys are all actually playing the same song. If you’re a fan of Sodom and Destruction and that ilk, check it out. |  Nunslaughter - Angelic Dread (Hells Headbangers) Despite the release of about 5,000 EPs, splits and live albums over the past 25+ years, this is only the 4th full length release from this Cleveland trio, and the first since 2007. With 15 tracks clocking in at just over 35 minutes, these dudes don’t waste any time delivering the goods. Furiously paced and chaotic, Angelic Dread finds the band blasting out thrashy death metal with Carcass-esque vocals. Despite the short songs, the riffs are well developed and there’s plenty of variety to go around. There’s also a bonus disc with another 16 songs of previously released material, if you’re into that kind of thing. |
USA Out Of Vietnam - Crashing Diseases and Incurable Airplanes (New Damage)
The debut album from the Montreal quintet features so many influences and guest musicians that it’s pretty hard to classify into a genre. There’s plenty of doom moments and psych/stoner riffs to go around, but they also throw in some brass sections and female vocals. I guess these guys fall into the dreaded “post-rock” category, but don’t let that scare you off. With five songs coming in at around an hour and the shortest song just under 8 minutes, these guys aren’t making radio hits, but they but they’re writing catchy tunes nonetheless. If you like your metal with a classic rock (and even sometimes poppy) vibe, you’ll find plenty to dig here.
