I'll be reviewing four classic doom albums side-by-side to see which stacks up as the second best classic doom album of all time, non-Sabbath category. My guess is that none of these four will unseat Candlemass-"Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" for the title, but we shall see.

As a child of the 80's I remember Candlemass coming out. Metal was splitting into 2 realms at the time, big hair and the thrash that I would get into, but there were plenty of bands that fell inbetween. Candlemass were one of them. I didn't like them then and can't say I remember anyone I knew liking them. Honestly I'd consider a more appropriate title for their big album being Epicus Crapicus Metallicus. When I started getting into doom a few years back I was shocked to see their name pop up as one of the classic doom bands. Obviously I'm in the minority with my thoughts on them amonst many fellow doomers. I just don't get it I guess. To me it's just bad metal of which there was a bunch of out at the time. I have to say I do agree with you on the rest of your reviews here though. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, I don't know what it is about that album, but I absolutley love it. It's in my top 5, hands down. The opening track "Solitude" is just unbelievable. The whole thing is just so cold. After Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, when they changed singers, I think Candlemass got kind of boring, but that first album...
