Here at The Blog of Doom, we're pretty excited about the emergence of heavy metal festivals across the US. While we're still light years behind Europe and their fancy Wacken, Bloodstock, Roadburn, etc., I think we're on the right track here in the States. Another festival has now been announced for this summer, the inaugural Southern Darkness Festival, which will take place on Saturday, August 23 in Tampa, FL. The lineup is pretty strong so far, featuring Pelican, Lord Mantis and Black Tusk, among others, with more bands still to be announced. Tickets will go on sale shortly, and you can keep tabs on the festival at their official facebook page. Confirmed lineup, so far, for Southern Darkness Fest 2014: Pelican All Pigs Must Die Maruta Centuries Sannhet Mouth of the Architect Black Tusk Jungbluth Yautja Order of the Owl A Storm of Light Phobia Strong Intention Zoroaster Everything Went Black Weekend Nachos Lord Mantis Coke Bust ASG Junius Set and Setting Traitor Crucifix Cosm Old school east coast doomsters Sourvein have announced a split LP release with Portland sludgelords Graves at Sea, to be released May 13 on Seventh Rule records. The Sourvein tracks were recorded by Mike Dean of CoC and Vista Chino fame, while the Graves at Sea tunes were recorded by Billy Anderson, who has worked with Sleep and Neurosis. That should give you some idea of the sheer heaviness involved here. Revolver is currently streaming one of the Sourvein tracks here, but so far I'm not aware of any available Graves at Sea tracks from this release. To preorder a CD or limited edition vinyl, check out Seventh Rule. In additional news, the two bands begin a trek across Europe today, starting with the Roadburn Festival. I've only recently become familiar with this band, but they have the official 'Stamp of Approval' from The Blog of Doom. If you haven't checked them out yet, stop whatever you're doing right now and give them a listen. Your skull will be crushed and I apologize for that in advance, but you'll likely survive.
Preorders for limited edition vinyl are available here: http://www.obeytheriff.com/ To stream and/or download tracks from both albums: http://beastwars.bandcamp.com/ The Skull, a doom quartet featuring 3 members of 80's doom pioneers Trouble (hence the name) have released two tracks off of their upcoming album for Tee Pee Records. There's some conflicting news about when the actual album will be released, but I think Fall 2014 is a safe bet right now. Regardless, you can hear the two new tracks here: http://teepeerecords.com/index.php New York City doom super group Serpentine Path (featuring former members of Electric Wizard, Winter, Unearthly Trance and Ramesses) have announced that they will release Emanations on May 27 on Relapse Records. Fans of the Doom/Death genre will want to mark their calendars for this release, the follow-up to their strong, self-titled 2012 debut album.
